Almost Got Arrested in Wal-Mart

After reading my Publix post from the other day, a friend reminded me about another incident at Wally World when I was asked to refrain from taking photos, which I had completely forgotten!  So, here’s a repost of a blast from the past off myspace blog from about two years ago.  Now, you know the real reason as to why I am a mom on the run. 😉

Almost Got Arrested in Wal-Mart

Not really, but it’s a funny story!

Some moms and I from my mommy group are planning an Easter party. This week, each mom was asked to shop around and get ideas for cheap chachkas for the goodie bags for the kiddies. Wal-Mart had a great selection of stuff, items in lots of 6 or 8 for $1. I had my digital camera with me, so I started snapping photos of some of the merchandise. What a great idea, right?

WRONG!  With in seconds, my daughters and I were swarmed by Wal-Mart security and one of the gentlemen asks me, “Why are you taking photos in the store, Ma’am?”

In a panicked voice, I reply, “I’m on an Easter Party Committee and I’m just getting ideas for some goodie bags to share with the other moms.”

One of the security guys speaks into a walkie-talkie, “It’s o.k. She’s on an Easter party committee.” And then speaks to me, “I’m going to ask you to stop taking photos in the store.”

“Please don’t confiscate my camera.”

“I’m not going to take your camera. Just stop taking photos, Ma’am.”

Speaking back into the walkie-talkie, “I asked her to stop.”

“O.k. I will”, I replied.  “Boy! You guys work fast. I only got a couple photos anyway!”

“Thank you, Ma’am. Just don’t take anymore photos and have a nice day!” He speaks into the walk-talkie, “We’re leaving now.” And then, they left.

Emmalynn was screaming the entire time. Allana shouting, “MOMMY, I HAVE TO USE THE POTTY!”

So, I guess I’m on some Wal-Mart watch list now. They probably zoomed in with their security cameras and took my photo. They probably thought I was planning some moms’ group heist. SAHM by day; Wal-Mart thief by night.

  1. O-kay. That’s a great story. Because I’m sure that the competing stores *do* send out sahms, you know, with the kids competing for their attention, to take pics of WW’s absolutely perfectly coordinated displays. And that those pictures will be very useful when, clad all in black, you leave your home, leaving your sleeping children, to break into the store for the $1 treats.

I’m glad you didn’t lose your camera, though. Which cost, I’m guessing, more than $1.

  2. I’m sure I’m on the same Walmart watchlist.

About 3 years ago, I saw a guy hit his wife in Walmart. I saw this going on down the aisle and tackled the guy, proceeding to beat some sense into him.

Walmart security and the local police came out, took both of us to jail. Charges were dropped against me because I was “attempting to stop an assault”. Not sure what happened to him.

From that point forward, every time I went into that Walmart I got a lot of worried looks from security/door guys.

    • I am the “security” at a local store and I wouldn’t give you worried looks.. I’d buy you a beer.. Hoo yah for a citizen who isn’t afraid to be a Man..

  3. hahaha. your walmart sounds like it has awfully high-security, esp for a walmart. i think all the teenages and old retirees at mine could care less 🙂

  4. 1. Those are just Wal-Mart police. The worst they could do is make to sit anywhere NEAR the bathrooms in the back. It isn’t liek they have a “no photos” sign anywhere…like a government facility…maybe they are hiding space ships in the hardware section.

    2. You should have snapped a picture of them.

  5. This was so funny! I could totally picture it happening. So, I went back and looked at the Publix post–and the same thing happened to me! I was so excited about the new Publix opening that I had to take a picture of my children in the new Publix. Fortunately, I was able to distract the Publix employee by making her go ask the manager to clarify the store’s policy while I snapped away! Do these stores really think that their prices and products are so secret when they are prominently on display?
